There have been several efforts by the FG to implement certain laws into the telecommunications system, there have been several deliberations to add tax to call made in Nigeria that is over three minutes. Not less than two weeks ago, the Nigerian Telecommunications Commission (NCC) gave out a directive to all telecoms operators to increase the price of their plans, but the Senate nullified the directive, stating that before such increments shall be made, all parties involved must be contacted and should give full consent.
While emphasizing on the known factors affecting the Nigerian Telecommunications industry, Mr. Ferdinand Moolman, The Chief Executive Officer of MTN NG, disclosed that the presence and operations of ‘over-the-top’ companies like WhatsApp, Viber have negative and unpleasant results on its business and also affects the sustainability of the telecommunications industry in the country.
Following the unsuccessful data price increase by the NCC, a hearing was organized by the Senate Committee on Communications and the event marked the presence of some dignitaries which was headed by the vice-chairman of the committee, Adeola Olamilekan. In the event, Mr. Moolman stated that the operations of Whatsapp and Viber in Nigeria has no positive, meaningful or significant effect in Nigeria and on Nigerians regarding employment and adds no socio - economic value to the Government of Nigeria.
Stating while the operations of Whatsapp, Viber and its like should be banned in Nigeria, Mr Moolman outlined that these companies neither have no physical presence in the country nor pays no tax and still erode a significant amount of income from the native telecom operators in the country. He further urged the Federal Government to put the situation into consideration and take the necessary actions just like United Arab Emirates did in 2015.
On the other hand, Etisalat NG has already increased the price of their data plans, despite the senate's rule to impede the December 1 data hike.
