After a long day-to-day activities, we all come back home, take a cozy shower, have some food, fruits or chilies. Then next thing is to go straight to our beds and home some rest. At this point, we may want to open the net ans see what's hot and what's trending. Checkout the scores of our favourite games or chat up some friends and colleagues on social media. Generally most people are (I myself included) are guilty of doing one thing or the other with smartphones at night, and that's alright but it is however not advised by health professionals.
Researchers, through constant examination of the effects of cell phones on our health, have discovered that regular use of our phones at night amounts to a greater risks of developing cancer through cell phone radiation.
“Blue light is part of the full light spectrum, which means we’re exposed to it by the sun every day. However, nighttime exposure to that light, which is emitted at high levels by smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other LED screens, may be damaging your vision. It also suppresses production of the hormone melatonin, which throws off your body’s natural sleep cues.”
Scientists have discovered that constant use of our smartphones at night are linked to the following health issues.
1. Loss of Sleep
“Blue light” disrupts the production of melatonin, which s the hormone that regulates the sleeping cycle of the body. If the body lacks adequate sleep, the skewed sleeping cycle will lead to multiple health issues which includes
Weight gain
Depression
Cardiovascular Problems
Lack of Memory Recall
Aged Skin
Slower Response Time etc
Increased exposure to light at night leads to disturbed sleep, and this raises the risk of an individual developing cancer, especially breasts and prostate cancer.
If Melatonin which is a potent antioxidant and a natural weapon of the body against cancer, is suppressed by “blue light”. At first It might not be a huge health issue, but continued use of smartphones at bedtime will lead to this melatonin being regularly suppressed, and this can surely cause a severe health problem(s).
“Melatonin is a hormone made by the pineal gland, a small gland in the brain. Melatonin helps control your sleep and wake cycles. Minuscule amounts of it are found in foods such as meats, grains, fruits, and vegetables. You can also buy it as a supplement.
3. Eye Damage
Constant exposure of the retina to the Blue light can lead to the damage of retina and macular degeneration, which is the loss of central vision, or the ability to see in front of you, as well as cataracts.
This was discovered when a doctor noticed a similar eye defects (cloudy, cataract-affected eyes) of a 75 year old on a 35 year patient. When he further examined, it was discovered that the young lad always make use of his smartphone at most nights before going to bed.
Technology has brought about several good things and hey add meaning o life. But a wrong use of these gadgets produced by technology can harm us from outside to inside. So please stay and play safe!!!
