Android 8.0 (codenamed) Oreo is Google's is latest mobile operating which was released officially some weeks ago. It comes with many interesting features which among them is the PiP (Picture in Picture Mode) that shrinks videos down to a resizeable window. It’s like the PiP setting on your flat-screen TV, but for apps.
Though this feature doesn't work with many apps yet, setting it up on the few apps that it supports can be quite tricky. SO in this article, I am going to show you how to setup and use picture-in-picture mode in Android 8.0 Oreo. But before that, it's important to know which apps that support this feature.

SO in this article, I am going to show you how to setup and use picture-in-picture mode in Android 8.0 Oreo. But before that, it's important to know which apps that support this feature.
Apps that support Android 8.0 Oreo’s picture-in-picture mode are:
- YouTube
- VLC
- Google Play Movies & TV
- Google Duo
- Google Maps
- Chrome
However, it is not always a walk in the park to describe or to say which app(s) supports this new Android 8.0 feature, it is dependent on the developers to specify this in the description of the app.
But above is a list of popular Android apps that supports PiP feature. And here is How to launch Android 8.0’s Picture-in-Picture Mode.
But above is a list of popular Android apps that supports PiP feature. And here is How to launch Android 8.0’s Picture-in-Picture Mode.
There isn't any traditional way of launching the Picture-in-Picture mode on Android apps/devices. It behavioral pattern depends on the app that is being used at the moment, for instance
In VLC, you have to tap the app’s menu button and the picture-in-picture option while the video’s playing then the PiP mode will be enabled.
In Google Chrome, you have to watch a video in full-screen mode before tapping the home button so as to enable the PiP mode.
In YouTube, you will have to subscribe to YouTube $10-a-year subscription to YouTube Red, YouTube’s premium ad-free service, before the PiP mode can be enabled and used.
Basically, for you to get a hang of how to enable and use the Picture-In-Picture mode in most apps, you may have to explore that app and its features. As there is no straightforward way to get this feature enabled. But I do hope that this will change in future because there is no need of waiting for a long time to have this feature but limited only to a handful of apps and devices.
How to use Android 8.0 Picture-in-Picture Mode’s controls
The picture-in-picture window is movable, tap the controls will show/hide them. Hold and drag to move it to any part of your device's screen, and lift your finger to release it. If you let go somewhere (invalid location) in the middle, the window snaps to the closest valid location.
Once the Android 8.0 Oreo’s picture-in-picture mode is enabled, it puts playback controls in the front and center. Tap on the PiP window and you’ll see a play, fast forward, and rewind buttons, and a center button that maximizes the app.
If you’re watching a video from YouTube or VLC, you’ll get a headphone shortcut that plays the video in the background. And if you’re watching a playlist, tapping on the fast-forward button skips to the next video in the list. When you want to disable the playback controls, a simple tap, hold, and drag to the bottom of the screen will do just fine.
To disable Android 8.0 Oreo’s picture-in-picture mode for specific apps:
1. Open the Settings menu on your phone or tablet.
2. Tap Apps & Notifications, and then tap on the Advanced menu.
3. Tap Special App Access.
4. Look for the picture-in-picture option and tap on it.
5. You’ll see a list of all installed apps that support picture-in-picture. They’re enabled by default; to disable one, tap it and slide the Allow picture-in-picture toggle to off.
Android 8.0 Oreo’s picture-in-picture mode really comes in handy and might be useful for multitasking. But it can also be annoying because it can be easily triggered by mistake. Luckily, you can disable picture-in-picture mode on a per-app basis.
