The Android Oreo was launched a few months ago with lots of features, but the downside there are only a handful devices that are running Android Oreo. And while the vast majority of smartphones on the market are still running older versions of the Android operating system, Google is already talking about and getting ready to launch Android 8.1.
The developer preview of Android 8.1 Oreo is already out but can only be of use to any of the recent Pixel or Nexus device. To be precise, the preview is only available for the Nexus 5X and 6P smartphones, the Pixel C tablet, and the Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 2 XL phones.
Don't get excited yet about the preview, because as of now, there are only a few ways to try the preview. First, you can join the Android Beta Program and wait for an over-the-air update. Or you can download and flash the image for your device. But going with the second option will wipe any data on your phone or tablet and you’ll have to continue flashing updates manually if you want to try future builds unless you join the beta program.
What Are The New in Android 8.1 Oreo?
There are a number of other changes in Android 8.1 and they are;
1. Optimizations for Android Go (for devices with less than 1GB of RAM)
2. The neural networks API (NNAPI) brings hardware acceleration for on-device machine learning.
3. Apps can only make a notification alert sound once per second.
4. There’s a new wallpapers color API.
5. Autofill framework updates
6. The navigation bar changes colors in different situations
7. A new power menu (when you press and hold the power button) which had debuted on the Pixel 2 is now available for older devices
8. The first-gen Pixel phones are also picking up the Pixel 2’s “always on” Ambient Display option.
Other Things to Know About Android 8.1 Oreo
1. Joining the Beta Program is the best option for trying Android Oreo as the downloading and flashing the image will wipe out every data on your phone.
2. Not only that flashing the image file will erase every file on your device, you will have to continue flashing updates manually if you want to try future builds, which of course won't be a good option for an average phone user.
3. Finally, it'd be safe to know that this is pre-release software so there may be bugs that wouldn’t be present.
