One thing I know for sure is that the era of foldable displays and screens is here. As far back as 2016, there's been rumours of a smartphone which will be launched by Samsung and they call it Galaxy X which is likely to be the company's first foldable smartphone. And now reports coming in the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, CES, reveals that the South Korean conglomerate secretly unveiled the Galaxy X at the event.
A report by The Korea Herald reads that the device seems to be nowhere near an expected release and that Samsung revealed the same at CES 2018 in front of a private audience on January 10. “Samsung Display said it has developed a 7.3-inch foldable panel with plans to start production later this year,”.
Samsung also shared the launch schedule with the private clients during the meeting. Another source told the publication that the development of the foldable Samsung device is ‘almost finished’ which would raise launch expectations.
So far, the upcoming Samsung device seems promising and it is expected to arrive in two versions:
1. An in-folding type smartphone which could go into production sometime around November this year.
2. Another is an out-folding type having lesser curvature rate (5R) than infolding (1R) but with more advanced next-generation technology to address durability issues.
The flexible OLED display is scheduled for development by March, and the production to start in September with the final version coming out in November.
There are several production issues, maybe software based and related to the OLED display. The goal is to create a display that doesn’t develop creases and folds smoothly.
There are also reports coming in from ETNNews that the Galaxy X could be launched towards the end of 2018 or possibly at the first quarter or 2019. But these reports aren't confirmed yet bySamsung'ss Chief, DJ Koh.
We will have more to inform you with as the day unfold, and probably by then, Lenovo C-Plus foldable smartphone will be up for sales.
