The January release of Android distribution shows that only 1.1% of the total population of Android users are using Android 8.0 Oreo. Now I can't say exactly why there is a low percentage of people using phones or tablets that are powered by Android O, but despite the low turn out, Google is already making plans and moves of releasing the next version of Android mobile OS, which is expected to be Android P.
Google's primary objective is to “improve the looks of the software to be more appealing to existing iPhone users in hopes that they’ll make the switch over to Google’s platform”. Improving the general performance of Android as a mobile OS as well as adding some enticing flashy designs which are expected to help make Android stand out.
Besides the addition of improved looks and flashy designs, Google is also said to be designing the updated operating system to better integrate camera notches, such as the ones found on the Essential Phone and iPhone X, as more and more hardware manufacturers embrace reduced-bezel designs.
As there are already spectacular phones with uncommon designs and features like dual screen display found in ZTE Axon M and Samsung Galaxy X with Foldable Display, Google plans that their new Android P will support each of these phones later this year.
Another feature of progress Google Plans to bring to Android P is Assistant, as Google considering allowing third-party developers and OEMs to directly integrate Assistant into their own apps. The assistant might also be added to the default Google search bar on the home screen, although neither of these decisions is apparently finalized yet.
There are expectations that Google will announce/release the developers' preview of Android P in May during the 2018 edition of Google I/O developers conference. It is, however, it is unfortunate to note or be reminded that not many phones in the Android market will be able to support and run Android P, but of course, the Pixel Phones won't be left out.
