Who would've thought centuries ago, or even 5 decades ago that the world would be technologically driven the way it is now. As long as life forms exist on planet earth, there will be many more inventions either by individuals or entities. Back in 2016, there was an article published here about Android Auto, which is essentially and system that runs your steering while you sit back and enjoy your ride, Skeptical ones must have thought it was a joke while blind ones must've it ain't gonna be possible, but today I pleased that a Japanese multinational electronics corporation headquartered in Kadoma, Osaka, Japan and are popularly known as Panasonic has joined in the race of making infotainment systems a reality.
Panasonic and an American-based multinational semiconductor and telecommunications equipment company which designs/markets wireless telecommunications products and services, otherwise known as Qualcomm have both launched an Android-based in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) platform. The IVI offers similar services like Google's Android Auto. The companies are aiming to create a smartphone-like Android Nougat system with high-end specs, including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820Am automotive processor with Adreno 530 graphics, 680 DSP and a high-speed LTE modem. Automakers can them customize it to their own specs and install it as a factory OEM system.
Tom Gebhardt (Panasonic Automotive President) states that the IVI is aimed at creating future-proof hardware that that consumer won't have a comically dated in-dash system in the coming years. "We expect it [to] include features beyond that of the next two in-vehicle infotainment generations ahead Tom Gebhardt added. The IVI system can also accommodate various third-party applications and screens, thereby letting automakers as well as OEMs to customize it for different vehicles.
Google is however not left out in this venture as IVI is somehow similar to Android Auto. This to show the world that Android has evolved into a turn-key automotive platform that enables automakers and suppliers to build next-gen IVI systems," Android Engineering Director Patrick Brady says. It's still not clear how that's different from Android Auto, but hopefully, we'll hear more about Google's plans over the coming days.
