BlackBerry KeyOne Running Android 7.0 Nougat Unveiled at MWC

It was a memorable event, and a happy one for some die hard blackberry users. The company which most people had thought that they exited decided to make an unannounced comeback and take everyone by surprise. A Chinese smartphone maker TCL Communication has introduced its first Blackberry-licensed phone (KeyOne) which has the physical keyboard.

Blakberry Keyone

TCL when displaying the device at the event said that KeyOne combines a touch display and a physical keyboard to give users a more useable space for typing, which they said that is better than a typical 5.5-inch all-touch smartphone. BlackBerry KeyOne also comes with BlackBerry Ltd's security and software.

KeyOne is the first product which is coming as a result of Blackberry and TLC Communications partnership. They hope that the partnership will help to address weaknesses in both companies and become fit to compete at global scale after a decade-long backsliding.

The new BlackBerry KEYone smartphone was one of the first devices unveiled ahead of the MWC (Mobile World Congress), Europe's largest annual trade fair, on Saturday. However, the price tag of  599 euros, $549 or 499 pounds placed on it is quite hefty and might affect its sales. TLC which is currently operational in over 160 countries did not specify which country(ies) the phone will be made available first starting from April 2017.

With an aluminum frame and textured backing, Blackberry KeyOne runs on Android 7.0 Nougat, with full access to Google Play store and apps. It fixes vulnerability issues which affect Android devices by receiving and installing regular security patches from Google. KeyOne also runs the iconic BBM secure messaging system, which BlackBerry earlier this month that it would make it available for software developers to build into their own products.

Other highlights of the device include 12 mega-pixel rear camera and 8 mega-pixel front camera. 4.5-inch screen display, and an aluminum frame and textured body which makes the device to be scratch resistant.

Blackberry has really come a long way after having some disappointing years. Making their OS open source is a significant step, and hopefully, this will make them rise again. More MWC updates coming, stay tuned
