The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2XL are Google's latest smartphones and they are loaded with lots of features as well as customization options. I have not really talked about the new Pixel phones and their features, except of how to enable Picture-in-Picture mode in Android Oreo which of course is not exclusive to the new Pixel phones. So, I thought it'd be nice to share with you, 5 new discovered features/ tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL.
And if you are worried you'd break your phone if you squeeze too hard, don't worry, Google's got you covered with a customization option in the settings menu which lets you adjust how soft or hard you have to squeeze your phone before it'll respond. All you have to do is to open Settings >>> Apps & notifications >>> Default Apps >>> Assist & Voice Input >>> Active edge. But if you feel like that's too many taps for you, just pull up your phone settings menu and search for “Active edge’”.
Then Google made this funny and interesting task of mine to become less challenging with a new feature called pixel now playing they built in Pixel 2 and Pixel 2XL. The job or function of Now playing is to listen to any song and identify the name and artist of that song and then display the details for you on your phone screen.
I am surprised that Google made this feature to be optional for users, so if you need to turn on the Now playing feature in your own pixel phone, go to Settings >>> Security & location >>> Lock screen preferences >>> Now Playing. Tap on the switch to turn the feature On. This feature is also linked to YouTube and Google Play Music, so whenever a song detail is displayed and you'd like to know more, just double-tap on your screen.
You needn't worry about your privacy when using this feature, because Now Playing listens for music, then identifies the song, without even transmitting any information to Google's servers. It's all done on the device, privately and securely.
To use Google lens in your Pixel 2 or Pixel 2XL, After taking a photo, or if you just want to experiment with old photos, launch the Google Photos app, select a picture, then tap on the Lens logo along the bottom (as seen in the picture above). An Assistant card will pop up, showing any relevant information for whatever is in the photo.
Now, with the launch of Pixel 2 and Pixel 2XL, Google announced a new “Made for Google” accessory line to go with the Pixel 2. Any of these devices are designed to be easy to pair with your Pixel 2. How easy? Turn on any of the compatible devices, (say headphones) with your phone next to them, tap on the alert, and you're done. For the time being, the feature only works on the Pixel 2. However, Google will add the feature to older devices in the future.
1. Squeeze the Edges
I know you are probably wondering what the heck is Squeeze the edges, yeah, I know. Surprisingly, when you squeeze the bottom half of either the Pixel 2 or Pixel 2XL, the phone will automatically launch Google Assistant, regardless if the phone is locked or if you're in another app.And if you are worried you'd break your phone if you squeeze too hard, don't worry, Google's got you covered with a customization option in the settings menu which lets you adjust how soft or hard you have to squeeze your phone before it'll respond. 2. Now Playing
Before the advent of Google Pixel 2, I used to employ some funny traditional means in identifying the name of songs I heard over the stereo and have no idea who did the song. I'd listen close enough to my headphones or to the stereo and grab a few lines from the lyrics of that song, then I will type it into Google search, and voila!...Then Google made this funny and interesting task of mine to become less challenging with a new feature called pixel now playing they built in Pixel 2 and Pixel 2XL. 3. Google Lens
At this year's Google I/O conference, we saw Google lens which is another cool toy from Google that identifies and tells you the details of a photo just by looking at it. Well, the good news is that lens is can be used in Pixel 2 phones without actually buying Google lens. But the bad news is that it is exclusive to only Pixel 2 phones and can only be accessed through Google's photo app.To use Google lens in your Pixel 2 or Pixel 2XL, After taking a photo, or if you just want to experiment with old photos, launch the Google Photos app, select a picture, then tap on the Lens logo along the bottom (as seen in the picture above). An Assistant card will pop up, showing any relevant information for whatever is in the photo.
4. Fast Pairing
One of the many things I've always loved about Apple and iOS devices is the kind of easy connection and integration they share. You can start up a work with your iPad and finish it on your iPhone or Mac laptop. And recently Microsoft introduced a similar feature in the Windows OS and they call it Continue on PC, which will be seen starting from Windows 10 Fall Update. Now, with the launch of Pixel 2 and Pixel 2XL, Google announced a new “Made for Google” accessory line to go with the Pixel 2.
