GloNG is the current telecom operator in the country with the cheapest internet data subscription at the moment. But despite their whopping amount of data, bonuses and all what not, the still controls 26.6% market share and 37 million customers, behind South African's MTN that has 50.7 million customers, and controls 36% market share.
For over a month now, EMTS NG which was popularly known as EtisalatNG did a rebranding and was changed to 9mobile. But the battle didn't end there as barely 5 months later, we reported that the company is up for sale again with Glo, Airtel, Smile, Dangote, etc are bidding for it.
Recent developments revealed that battle of who will be the next new owner of 9Mobile is depending on GloNG and Airtel NG. The fact that both companies are financially grounded and have lots of experiences in the Nigerian market serves as an advantage to either of them.
Presently, Reports say four out of the remaining 10 initial bidders have formed an alliance to reduce the chances of the remaining one, which appeared to have the financial muscle to crush the other bidders ahead of the deadline. And so far, Globacom is considered to be in a better position to acquire 9mobile if it truly desires to lead the Nigerian market.
If Glo adds up it's 26.6% to 9Mobile’s 12.2%, it will rise to 38.8% and tactically dethrone MTN, which is currently at 36% - industry analyst believes.
As stated earlier, GloNG currently has the cheapest data plan in Nigeria, in addition to that, they currently operate in four West African countries, namely Nigeria, Republic of Benin, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire,
The telecommunications firm built an $800million worth of high-capacity fibre-optic cable known as Glo-1, a submarine cable from the United Kingdom to Nigeria, yet their data connection still sucks.
Before the commencement of the bid for 9Mobile began, the company had 17 million customers, which is 12.2% of the market and is one step below Airtel which has 35 million subscribers which are 25.2% of the telecoms market users and internet subscribers, when shared among the top 4 telecommunications operators in the country.
Personally, if the next owner of 9Mobile rests on a public vote, I do not see GloNG emerging the winner. We just have to wait until 31st December 2017 when the winner who will probably be the highest bidder emerges.
