This is beginning to turn into a culture for Facebook-owned number 1 instant messaging app WhatsApp, that at the end of every year, they will drop support for several phones that run on a certain operating system.
First, it was all types of Blackberry phones, with blackberry 10 not being exempted. Then all Nokia phones that run on old Nokia S60 and S40 software which the S40 was later cut some slack. Older versions of Android phones like Android 20 and 2.1. Windows phones that run on Windows 7.0 and 7.1.
Now the company is moving forward to drop support for more phones by the end of 2017. This was made known to the public by the company in one of its recent blog post that it will end support for Blackberry, Microsoft Windows, and Nokia. So, if you are running Blackberry OS, Blackberry 10 and Windows Phone 8.0 or Older then you will no more use the app after December 31, 2017.
This means that WhatsApp users with any of these phones will no longer be able to chat and text with their phones once the support is terminated. WhatsApp on its blog stated that
“This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp. If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp”
And if you are wondering if your current phone will be affected or not, here is the list of unsupported phones released by WhatsApp earlier this week in their announcement blog post
==>> BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10
==>> Nokia S40
==>> Nokia Symbian S60
==>> Android 2.1 and Android 2.2
==>> Windows Phone 7
==>> iPhone 3GS/iOS 6
==>> BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 after December 31, 2017
==>> Windows Phone 8.0 and older after December 31, 2017
==>> Nokia S40 after December 31, 2018
==>> Android versions 2.3.7 and older after February 1, 2020
WhatsApp agrees that these mobile devices have been an important part of their success story, but these phones don't offer the kind of capabilities they need to expand their WhatsApp's features in the future, hence support for these phones is terminated.
