One of the things I've always loved about Linux is that security is the only language it understands. When several Windows users were getting their heads smashed by the WanaCry ransomware, Linux users were at the beach getting relaxed with the best chilies that the world could offer.
However, the recent Meltdown And Spectre security flaws put every electronic device at risk irrespective of the platform. Windows, iOS, macOS, Android, even Linux were all affected because the flaw was hardware and not software originated. Even Tails that is considered to be one of the most secure Linux Distro was affected.
Thanks to kernel developers and hardware makers for combining their mitigation steps taken, Tails has incorporated the fixes and pushed the new release in the form of Tails 3.4. Tails 3.4 comes with usual security patches and bug fixes. “In particular, Tails 3.4 fixes the widely reported Meltdown attack, and includes the partial mitigation for Spectre,” the release report says.
Other Fixed Problems Fixed in Tails 3.4 are as Follows:
✔ Slow start of Tails
✔ Not deleting packages after installation
✔ Installation of packages not in proper manner
The official download links for Tails 3.4 can be found here, if you’re already running earlier versions of Tails eg 3.2 and 3.3, you’ll get the advantage of the automatic upgrade to 3.4
3 Things You Should Note About Tails 3.4
1. The graphical splash screen during startup disappears but the developers have urged the users to ignore this issue if your installation of Tails 3.4 works fine.
2. Another issue is the lack of sidebar in documentation shipped in Tails.
3. This release of Tails 2.3 also kicked off the development of Tails 3.5 which is scheduled for release on January 23.
