The recent security flaws dubbed Meltdown And Spectre affected almost every PC in the market. Even Linux machines that are said to be the most secure device on the market were affected as well because the flaws were hardware based which is a fault on the hands of the manufacturers.
Several developers are already combining efforts to mitigate the issue, for instance, Tails 3.4 was just released with Meltdown And Spectre Patches and are already for download. In the case of Ubuntu machines, what was intended to fix serious vulnerabilities in Intel processors is leaving users with even new and troubling problems.
Some Ubuntu users have reported on Ubuntu forums and Launchpad bug tracker that they’re finding their Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Xenial Xerus unbootable after installing the Linux kernel update (Linux-image-4.4.0-108-generic) containing the Meltdown fix.
Canonical in response to this unpleasant development released a security notice to the affected users to switch to the last working kernel version via GRUB. Afterwards, they can remove the buggy kernel update and install new kernel version 4.4.0-109-generic via system update which is working fine.
In a more troubling development, some Ubuntu Xenial 16.04 users were still unable to boot their machines after installing the Meltdown patch. They are unable to boot their systems and are forced to roll back to an earlier Linux kernel image.
The update led to a flurry of activity on the Ubuntu forums and other Linux resources online, with users complaining that moving to kernel image 4.4.0-108 was causing issues.
