Romania’s Team ENTy Wins Microsoft Imagine Cup 2016

Some or many of us don't know or absolutely have no idea of the on-going and just Microsoft Imagine Cup. It is the world’s most prestigious student technology competition, which brought together many student innovators from all over the world.

The competition which was held at the home of Microsoft, Seattle Washington, in the United States of America, featured so many students around the world who showcased different talents in technology. It is recorded that out of 35 the teams that were selected from around the world for the finals, Nigeria is the only country from West Africa. with Tunisia and South Africa being the other African countries that participated and each of these teams were judged by a global panel of MVPs, Industry experts and of course Microsoft staff.

Team Nigeria developed a solution called Humane. It simplifies mobile apps for visually impaired persons. To me, this Humane defines a new approach for mobile app development for the visually impaired. By connecting their three button device to their humane software, the visually impaired can do things like surf the web, play their favourite songs, use calculator, control home appliances, make and receive calls, check the time or date and use the camera to determine what is in front.

There were three categories in the competition which were Games, Innovation and World Citizenship categories, the team ENTy in the innovation category from Romania took the first place and emerged the winner of the 2016 Imagine Cup World Championship. The finals which was held at the Quincy Jones Performing Arts Centre at Seattle’s Garfield High School, Washington, the United States of America featured hundreds of students, judges, Journalists and the top three teams in the Games, Innovation and World Citizenship categories where Team ENTy (which include Flavia Oprea, Iulian-Razvan Matesica and Cristian Alexandrescu), in the innovation category from Romania, claimed the victory with their wearable device which tracks the inner ear balance and spinal posture and tell users if they are having balance or posture issues.

“We did not know we could do it. We were going to launch it and get medical certificate for the product. This will help deliver the products to the hospital. But we need angel investors and seed fund to scale up the solution” Iulian-Razvan Matesica, the Romanian spoke with excitment.

It would be recalled that the final leg of the nearly year-long Imagine Cup journey began on Wednesday, when 35 teams from all over the globe competed in front of our judges for the top three spots in the Games, Innovation and World Citizenship categories.

Team PH21 of Thailand in Games, Team ENTy of Romania in Innovation and Team AMANDA of Greece in World Citizenship each claimed their $50,000 category prize and then moved on to the Championship round to compete for the grand prize which is the Imagine Cup crown and a private mentoring session with Microsoft CEO.
